If you've been following Cyprus's reservoir recovery this season — from 27 mln. m³ in December to over 100 mln. m³ last week — you know the numbers. But have you ever walked along the shore of an overflowing dam, or stood on the crest of a reservoir that's been empty for months?
Today we're announcing Monopatia — a free, open guide to hiking trails across Cyprus. It's the most comprehensive catalogue on the island: 164 routes and growing, with detailed maps, elevation profiles, GPS tracks, difficulty ratings, and GPX downloads. The trail catalogue is curated by Ivan Agafonov based on years of field research. The app is built by Vladimir Bugay — the same developer behind Fragmata.
Dam Trails — Where Water Data Meets the Path
Monopatia has a dedicated Dam Trails collection — 7 trails that take you to or around Cyprus's reservoirs. Two of them lead to dams that Fragmata readers know well:
Germasoyeia — currently holding 69% of capacity after a strong recovery. Two trails run along this dam:
- Germasogeia Dam — a 1.88 km easy loop around the reservoir, perfect for a morning walk
- Kyparissia – Germasogeia Dam — an 8.48 km hard linear descent through the hills above the dam, dropping 580 m to the waterline
Xyliatos — overflowing at 100% since late March, one of five Nicosia dams that reached full capacity this season. The Xyliatos trail is a 3.63 km moderate loop through the forest surrounding the reservoir — a different way to experience a dam you've been watching on charts.
