About
Unlike the other units, the Garyllis plant does not take seawater. It treats brackish, nitrate-rich groundwater from the boreholes of the Limassol District Local Government Organisation (EOA) in the bed of the Garyllis river in Limassol.
The Water Development Department ran an accelerated tender in March 2025, estimated at €9 million. Four companies bid, and on 4 August 2025 the contract went to ODIS of Petach Tikva, Israel, for €7.93 million: ODIS designs, builds and runs the plant for five years, then hands it over to the department, which plans to keep it as a reserve. First water was promised for June 2025, then December 2025, then spring 2026. The ministry cited regional geopolitical developments and late delivery of equipment, and power-supply problems followed. Trial operation began on 10 June 2026 and normal operation was confirmed on 29 June. As of September 2026 the plant was not listed in the department's weekly water bulletin.
A similar unit worked here before. From January 2009 to 2013 Nirosoft Industries treated water from the same aquifer under a five-year contract, at about €0.30 per m³. After its first year the nitrate in its water exceeded the contract limit, and it ended its contract on standby.
