About
This was to be a floating desalination unit of 20,000 m³ a day, moored off Germasogeia, just east of Limassol, near the Miramare hotel, and supplying the Limassol area. The cabinet added it to the programme on 22 January 2026, with first water planned for January 2027.
The tender process ended without result in March 2026. The Finance Ministry put the price of its water at about €4 per m³, or €3.5 with a submarine power cable from the shore, against €0.85 to €1.82 per m³ for the land-based units. The feasibility study gave a benefit-cost ratio of 0.18 to 0.23, meaning the expected benefits covered only about a fifth of the cost.
On 2 September 2026 the cabinet postponed the unit, to be looked at again later in the light of water needs, reserves and cost.
