About
Polis Chrysochous is the smallest of the four new permanent plants, at 10,000 m³ a day. The political decision was confirmed on 3 July 2026, when the agriculture minister met the mayor of Polis, and the cabinet approved the plant on 2 September 2026, subject to all approvals and permits. On 15 September 2026 the minister told the House agriculture committee that it should be finished in 2031.
Polis is not on the government network fed by dams and desalination: it drinks borehole and spring water. The plant would therefore replace groundwater, not dam water. In November 2025 the Audit Office found that water projects for Polis Chrysochous and Tylliria had been promoted late. As a stopgap, the Water Development Department tendered three small filtration units of 500 m³ a day each at Neo Chorio in June 2026. They treat fresh water and are not desalination.
The main open question is the site. Three candidates were under study in September 2026: Neo Chorio between two hotels, Latsi, and the coast between the camping site and Agia Marina. Each has a constraint; between them they involve a harbour area, a seal cave and a Natura 2000 area with turtle nesting beaches. No operator, cost or tender date has been announced.
