    About

The Vasilikos plant stands inside the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power station at Mari, on the south coast between Limassol and Larnaca. It supplies communities east of Limassol and feeds the conveyor to Famagusta through the Choirokoitia water tank. Because the drinking-water conveyor from Vasilikos to Nicosia is unfinished, part of its output goes into the Southern Conveyor raw-water main and is treated again at Tersefanou.

EAC tendered the plant in 2008 at the request of the Water Development Department (WDD), and in 2010 it was enlarged to 60,000 m³ a day. The Israeli firm IDE Technologies built it for about €46 million. The explosion at the neighbouring naval base on 11 July 2011 stopped the work, and the plant came about 17 months late: tests in July 2013, regular production in 2014.

The WDD buys its water under a 20-year agreement, from July 2013 to July 2033, at a base price of €0.813 per m³. Unlike the other plants, it stays with EAC when the contract ends, and its contract allows a full stop but not reduced output. Its electricity comes from the power station it stands in. It was stopped from November 2015 to January 2016 while the dams were full, for emergency works in July 2024, and by rough seas in March 2026.
