    About

The Mazotos unit is planned on the Larnaca district coast at Makaronia, near Cape Petounta, about 2 km from the village. The cabinet added it to the programme on 22 January 2026, and at up to 40,000 m³ a day it is the largest of the mobile units. On 8 April 2026 the Environmental Authority cleared the site for a unit of 20,000 m³ a day at first, rising to 40,000, with a seven-year life and a 3,700 m pipeline on land; sites at Softades, Maroni and Psematismenos were rejected. The seven-year water supply contract is put at about €85 million, plus about €6.8 million for pipelines and land. No contractor had been appointed by the end of September 2026.

No other unit has met such strong local opposition. The community council cited seagrass meadows and reefs off the site, residents protested in January 2026, and in June the council went to court. A Special Development Decree issued in July is challenged in a second case. After the Ayia Napa unit was cancelled, residents complained of unequal treatment, and on 9 September 2026 the new minister, Christos Senekis, said he would examine their request to cancel. First water, once due in December 2026, is now expected between May and July 2027.
