About
The Moni unit stands inside the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power station at Moni, east of Limassol, and supplies the Limassol area. It is a group of small containerised reverse-osmosis units, each making about 1,040 m³ a day. The United Arab Emirates lent them free of charge under an agreement signed in Dubai on 1 May 2025.
The first unit started trial operation on 22 July 2025, later than the June target, and full output came in December 2025. The loan was first to run until the end of 2026; a Special Development Decree has since extended operation to 31 December 2029. Caramondani Engineers installs and runs the units, and the Water Development Department pays for their electricity, taken from the grid at the power station. Paphos leaders protested when all the units went to Limassol, and the neighbouring community of Pyrgos objected and asked for compensating measures.
The site has been used before. From December 2008 to January 2012, during the previous drought, a 20,000 m³ a day mobile unit run by Silnir Cyprus stood at the same power station, under a three-year contract at €1.387 per m³. It stopped for several weeks in the summer of 2011, when the Mari explosion cut the island's power supply.
